What if America had a royal family?
When America won the Revolutionary War, its people offered General George Washington a crown. Two and a half centuries later, the House of Washington still sits on the throne.
As Princess Beatrice gets closer to becoming America’s first queen regnant, the duty she has embraced her entire life suddenly feels stifling.
Nobody cares about the spare except when she’s breaking the rules, so Princess Samantha doesn’t care much about anything, either . . . except the one boy who is distinctly off-limits to her.
And then there’s Samantha’s twin, Prince Jefferson. If he’d been born a generation earlier, he would have stood first in line for the throne, but the new laws of succession make him third. Most of America adores their devastatingly handsome prince . . . but two very different girls are vying to capture his heart.
I am a bit late to the party with this one, I remember seeing it being advertised at YALC 2019 and sadly I’ve only just gotten around to actually reading it, as much as I loved the sound of the book. When I finally got stuck in I was kicking myself about why I had waited so long to read this one!
Each chapter was divided between four different characters, giving you each person’s perspective and their story. The eldest child and the heir to the throne, Beatrice, was now getting ready and preparing herself to become the first Queen. Pressured into finding herself a husband/future King she never expected her to fall in love with someone she wasn’t supposed to. Samantha, the middle child and twins with Jefferson, has always lived in her sister’s shadow. Sam wasn’t going to be heir and she didn’t really want to be either, and with being a rebel being able to do whatever she wanted, she finds herself for someone she shouldn’t. Nina, who is Samantha’s best friend, is just a commoner, but they have been friends for a long time has slowly started developing feelings for her best friend’s twin brother Jefferson, a Prince. Would she be allowed to date him? If she did, what would life be like for her in the limelight? The last character is Daphne, Jefferson’s ex, who thinks that she should still be dating the Prince and cannot get over the break up.
I loved the dynamics between each character and how each perspective showed a different side of the story and builds all the connections together. I love the drama between everyone throughout. Between the relationships of the friendships, the siblings, the parents, or the press each play a massive part in the story.
It made me laugh, cry and left me frustrated (in a good way) at times with the characters choices or decisions. It really intrigued me, the difference between each four stories, but then loved how they all seamlessly connected. Living in the UK I don’t know much about American History, and it didn’t affect the read, but I love that we have a Royal Family in the UK and it has left me wondering what would happen if other countries did too, and how they would be different if they had their own Royals, and would they have the same amount of love and influence? American Royals gives you a little snippet of what could possibly happen if Presidents never came into play.
It ended in such a way that made it clear a second book was going to be released. It didn’t really have a ‘real’ ending, but it set up the second novel perfectly and kept you wanting to read on!
I can’t wait to read Majesty; I won’t be waiting as long as I did to read the first!
